Popular consistent beachbreak watched over by imposing castle. User friendly wave, easy access and nearby parking. Low to mid tide, as towards high stops working and access tricky due to sea wall. SW offshore wind and N/NE groundswells ideal, works even in summer. Decent in east windswells when it wraps castle headland, which also shelters from S->SE winds at Rights.
Reef and rocks around, rippy (fixed rip on south headland useful for paddle outs), busy especially in summer, tricky access towards high and sadly winner of most sewage dumped spot in England (avoid after rain/check SSRS app
If too big South Bay or even Filey to the south offer increasing shelter. If they've dumped try Cayton Bay.

  • Main beach A-frames up and down the southern half of the bay. Soft and slow, particularly on smaller days. Great for longboarding and learning.
  • Rights right sand over reef peak under the castle headland. Works best with an ENE, or a large easterly wrapping around the headland. In N it can break onto the headland rocks. Only spot in the area that has shelter from south easterlies.
  • Supersucks fickle punchy and sometimes hollow board breaker of a reef break to the north, best only tackled by intermediate+ surfers. Only option that works mid to high tide.

Paid (in season) [parking](latlon:54.288135, -0.398268) along Royal Albert Drive, plus paid toilets. [Disc zone](latlon:54.288367, -0.399617) also height unrestricted. Access down sea wall steps (be aware of tide times - climbing wall is rite of passage). Cafes, pubs, bars, plus [best chips](54.289223, -0.407667) in area.
