Longsands is a popular, mellow, beach break at the heart of the North East England surf scene. Most consistent spot in the area, works on all tides and has something for everyone along its length.

Peaks: A-frames all along bay, lots of choice and can handle a crowd fairly well.

Tide: All, mid to high ideal.

Swell: N/NE/E, NE ideal. If it's too big, check out nearby Eddies, Whitley Bay or Blyth Beach. If it's too small you're probably out of luck.

Wind: <span style="color: green;”>SW ideal. Some shelter from strong SW/W towards high, as well as S in the south end of the bay.

Hazards: rips, rocks, reef, access, crowds. water quality (though getting better). Fixed rip at south end of bay alongside old tidal pool, useful for getting out back when bigger, flash rips along bay. Popular with beginners and surf schools, can get crowded over summer season weekends in particular. Generally OK water quality, but Tyne river mouth and local sewage outlets can cause issues, particularly after rain - check SSRS app.

Parking/access/facilities: Parking on side of access ramp to south end of bay, or roadside pay and display at cliff top, access down cliff path. Surf shop and cafe on the beach, plus lots of cafes, toilets, pubs, etc in town.
