Historic centre of the Yorkshire surf scene and consistent popular spot. Range of setups that between them work tide round, with something for everyone.

Breaks

• Main beach: peaks up and down beach, best around pier. User friendly, works pretty much tide round, best around mid.
• Penny’s Hole: punchier sand (at low) and cobblestone (mid-high) break in front of the Ship Inn. Intermediate+
• Saltburn Point: fickle, long, right-hand reef/point break off the southern Saltburn Scar headland. Low, Scar offers some shelter from SE/ESE. Experts only.

Tide: All, mid ideal. Skip spring highs & lows.

Swell: N/NE. Swell magnet. Try Coatham Sands if too big or too E. Lots to explore in the surrounding areas.

Wind: SW. Some shelter from ESE/SE at The Point, some S depending on beach peak - check out Coatham Sands as well. Some shelter from very strong offshores at high tide.

Hazards: rocks, pier/pilings, pollution, rips, crowds. Water quality improved, but backsliding -use SSRS app. Rippy, especially when big. Often crowded over summer when good.

Access, parking & facilities: paid parking at Seafront & Catnab, including overnighting for vans with easy walk over road to beach and free/time limited parking on Marine drive at top of cliff, with steps down. Often overrun in summer. Cafes, paid toilets (closed overnight).
